Come Just As You Are
Scripture Focus: Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Devotional
There’s something powerful about an invitation.
Not one that comes with conditions… or expectations…
but one that simply says:
“Come.”
Having grown up in a performance-driven environment, it’s easy for me to fall into the mindset
that everything has to be just right.
I received countless invitations to compete in vocal competitions. When I walked onto the stage,
most of the time I never saw faces… only heard voices.
The first thing they would say was,
“Thank you for being here today. What do you have for us?”
I would announce my song, and the music would begin.
And in that moment, as I sang for the judges, there was always an internal battle:
I hope they like this.
Did I sing that phrase correctly?
Is my pitch on point?
When the song ended, they would say, “Thank you.”
I would respond, “Thank you.”
And then… you wait.
Waiting to see if you were good enough to continue.
Good enough to move forward.
Good enough to win.
I realized something…
I approached God the same way.I would hear His call… feel His prompting…
but my thoughts would sound like this:
Am I ready?
Have I done enough?
Do I deserve to be in His presence?
Do I even have the right to ask Him for anything?
But here’s the truth:
He sees everything.
He knows where I’ve been… even the places I shouldn’t have been.
He knows every choice, every thought, every failure…
and He knows where I’m going.
And yet…
He still extends a personal invitation to me every single day.
Unlike the judges in a competition,
God is not sitting there thinking:
That phrase wasn’t quite right.
Your pitch could have been better.
Why would you even choose that song?
When those thoughts try to creep in, I remind myself of His invitation:
“Come.”
“Come just as you are.”
Those moments on stage, standing before faceless judges, felt cold… distant… and honestly
uninviting.
They were waiting to be impressed.
Waiting to decide if I was worthy.
But God…
He may be unseen, but I see Him in all of creation.
And instead of a cold evaluation, I hear a warm welcome:“Thank you for coming.”
He doesn’t make me feel like just another voice in a sea of billions.
I am seen.
I am heard.
I am loved…
simply for who I am.
So wherever you are today…
whatever you’re carrying…
whatever you think disqualifies you…
hear this clearly:
You are invited.
Not after you fix everything.
Not after you get it all right.
But right now.
Just as you are.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your invitation isn’t based on my performance.
Thank You that I don’t have to earn my way into Your presence.
Help me to lay down the need to be perfect…
and simply come to You honestly, just as I am.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
