When the Bucket Is Empty
There are moments when you simply have nothing left to give.
I reached one of those moments recently.
After several long days, unexpected challenges, learning a new system, answering questions, solving problems, and trying to remain steady for the people around me, I could feel my patience wearing thin.
And almost immediately, the familiar voice of self-judgment appeared.
You should be more patient.
You should handle this better.
You shouldn't feel this way.
But this time, I stopped.
I'm human.
Humans get tired.
There are times when the bucket is simply empty.
And perhaps acknowledging that isn't weakness at all. Perhaps it's honesty.
The Empty Bucket
Sometimes we approach God as though He expects us to arrive full.
Full of faith.
Full of patience.
Full of strength.
Full of answers.
But if I were already full, why would I need a well?
A well exists precisely because there are empty vessels waiting to be filled.
And in that moment, something became clear to me:
I can go to the Well.
Then came another thought—one that stopped me in my tracks.
I'm not the Keeper of the Well.
He is.
I don't have to manufacture patience when mine is gone.
I don't have to manufacture peace when everything around me feels unsettled.
I don't have to pretend there is water in my bucket when I know it is dry.
I can simply come.
Come Empty
Jesus said:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
Notice what He didn't say.
He didn't say, “Get yourself together first.”
He said, Come.
Come weary.
Come burdened.
Come when your patience is gone.
Come when you don't have the answer.
Come with the empty bucket.
Because the supply was never dependent upon the bucket.
It depends upon the Well.
And the Well does not run dry.
The Keeper of the Well
Maybe you've been running on empty too.
Maybe you've been giving to your family, your work, your ministry, your friends—everyone seems to need something, and you've kept reaching into yourself trying to find just a little more.
And now there's nothing left.
Don't condemn yourself for being empty.
Acknowledge it.
Then return to the Well.
You were never asked to be the source.
God is.
You were never asked to keep the Well full.
He is the Keeper of the Well.
Our responsibility is much simpler:
Keep coming back.
A Prayer
Lord,
Sometimes I come to You with nothing left.
My patience is gone.
My strength is low.
My bucket is empty.
Teach me not to condemn myself for being human.
Instead, remind me where to go.
I don't have to manufacture what only You can provide.
You are my Source.
You are faithful.
And You are the Keeper of the Well.
So today, I come with an empty bucket.
Fill me again.
In Jesus Name
Amen.
